Laguna de Apoyo Nicaragua Day Trip — What to Expect + Lunch at Mi Viejo Ranchito

If you live in Nicaragua or you're visiting and you haven't been to Laguna de Apoyo yet — stop what you're doing and go. It's one of those places that reminds you exactly why you chose to live here instead of staying back in the US.

We did the day trip recently, spent the morning at the lake, then drove over to Mi Viejo Ranchito in Catarina for lunch on the way back. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is Laguna de Apoyo?

Laguna de Apoyo is a volcanic crater lake sitting between Masaya and Granada. About 20,000 years ago a volcano erupted and collapsed, leaving behind a massive caldera that eventually filled with crystal clear freshwater. The lake is over 175 meters deep and the water is naturally warmed by geothermal activity underground — so you're essentially swimming in a giant warm volcanic pool surrounded by jungle.

It's been declared a nature reserve which means no motorized boats on the water. The result is one of the most peaceful places I've found in Nicaragua — calm, quiet, clean water, howler monkeys in the trees above you.

The quick facts: 30 minutes from Granada, 45 minutes from Masaya. Crystal clear warm water. Day pass at most beach clubs runs $5–$10. One of the top things to do in Nicaragua — full stop.

Getting There

If you have a car it's easy — take the Carretera Masaya toward Catarina and follow the signs down into the crater. The road down is steep and winding but fine in a normal vehicle. Give yourself about 10 minutes from the main highway down to the water.

No car? Chicken buses from Granada run toward Masaya and drop you at the entrance to the lagoon for under $1. From there it's a walk down or a short taxi. Most hostels in Granada also organize day trips for a few dollars.

What to Do There

Honestly — swim, float, kayak, and do absolutely nothing. That's the whole point. The water is so clear and warm that most people spend the entire morning just in it. There are kayaks available at most beach clubs, hammocks strung between trees, and deck chairs right at the water's edge.

  • Kayaking across the crater is something everyone should do at least once — the lake is 6.6km across so you get a real sense of how massive it is
  • Howler monkeys are almost always audible and sometimes visible in the trees above the beach clubs
  • The water is warm enough that you never want to get out — dress accordingly
  • Freediving Nicaragua operates here if you want to try something more adventurous
  • Arrive before 10am to get the best spot before tour groups start arriving

Pro tip: Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends. If you can go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning you'll practically have the place to yourself. Weekends fill up with Nicaraguan families and it gets loud by midday.

Lunch at Mi Viejo Ranchito

On the way back from Laguna de Apoyo we stopped at Mi Viejo Ranchito in Catarina — and this is a stop I'd recommend to anyone doing this day trip. It sits right near the crater rim with views down toward the lake and across to the volcanoes.

Mi Viejo Ranchito is one of the most well-known traditional Nicaraguan restaurants in the country. They've been around for years, they have multiple locations, and they are the first Nicaraguan business to earn the SICCS green sustainability certification — which tells you something about how seriously they take quality.

We ordered traditional Nicaraguan food — carne asada, gallo pinto, tostones, fresh salad — and cold Miller Lites. The food was genuinely delicious. Everything tasted fresh, the portions were generous, the service was quick and friendly.

Total bill for two people including beers: 1,908 Córdobas — $53 US dollars. For a full sit-down lunch at a proper restaurant with drinks, that's exceptional value.

Is the Laguna de Apoyo Day Trip Worth It?

Without question. This is one of the best days you can have in Nicaragua without spending much money or traveling far. The lake is genuinely stunning, the water is perfect, and combining it with lunch at Mi Viejo Ranchito makes for a complete, satisfying day out.

If you're thinking about moving to Nicaragua or you're already here — this is exactly the kind of day that makes you remember why you chose this life. Two hours from your front door to floating in a volcanic crater lake. That's the deal.

Total day cost estimate: Day pass $7 + lunch $27 per person + gas/transport = roughly $40–$50 per person for a full day. Try doing that on a Saturday back in the US.
