Colonial City

Granada, Nicaragua

One of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas — stunning architecture, volcanic lake views, and the perfect base for exploring southwestern Nicaragua.

Granada is the jewel of Nicaragua. Founded in 1524 by Spanish conquistadors, it sits on the shores of Lake Nicaragua with the smoking Mombacho volcano looming behind it. The streets are lined with brightly painted colonial churches and mansions, horse-drawn carriages still share the road with tuk-tuks, and the central park fills up every evening with locals and expats alike.

For American expats Granada is often the first stop and for many it becomes home. It has the best infrastructure of any Nicaraguan city outside Managua — good restaurants, reliable internet, a solid expat community, and easy access to everything else worth seeing in the country.

The quick take: Granada is Nicaragua's most visitor-friendly city. It's beautiful, walkable, affordable, and has enough going on to keep you busy for weeks. Laguna de Apoyo is 30 minutes away, Masaya Volcano is 20 minutes, and Managua airport is 45 minutes.

Getting There

Granada is 45 minutes from Managua airport by taxi or shuttle. Chicken buses run regularly from Managua's Mercado Huembes terminal for under $1. From Masaya it's 20 minutes by bus or taxi. Most expats based in Granada have a car or motorbike for day trips but the city itself is completely walkable.

Expat tip: The best neighborhoods for expats in Granada are within walking distance of Parque Central. Avoid renting anything more than 10 minutes walk from the center unless you have your own transport — the city is built for walking and you'll want that convenience.

Cost of Living in Granada

Granada sits in the middle of Nicaragua's price range. A furnished one bedroom apartment within walking distance of the park runs $350 to $500 a month. Meals at local restaurants cost $3 to $8. Granada has more expat-oriented restaurants than most Nicaraguan cities which means more variety but also higher prices if you lean that way.
