Volcanic Lake

Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua

Nicaragua's most stunning volcanic crater lake — crystal clear warm water, jungle-covered crater walls, and one of the most peaceful places in Central America.

Laguna de Apoyo is the crown jewel of day trips from Granada. A volcanic crater that collapsed 20,000 years ago and filled with crystal clear freshwater — the result is one of the most beautiful swimming spots in Central America. The water is naturally warm from geothermal activity below, completely calm since motorized boats are banned, and surrounded by jungle-covered crater walls.

For expats living in the Masaya and Granada area this is the go-to weekend escape. It never gets old.

The volcanic lake is 175 meters deep and 6.6km across. The water temperature sits at a perfect 27–28°C year round thanks to underground geothermal activity. No motorized boats means the surface is always mirror calm.
